georgetown university basketball star who was hospitalized tonight after being shot at home in prince george's county. >> and now the police are searching for the gunmen. >> we can tell you that a high- ranking law enforcement source has confirmed that the man who was shot in his home near buie behind us, shot multiple times, is, in fact, 42-year-old former basketball star charles smith. he played in the late 80's with the georgetown hoyas and went on to play with the boston celtics. he was the big player of the year in 1989. after graduating there he went on to play pro basketball in boston. the shooting was over a gambling debt. the suspect has fled the scene. witnesses told police they saw a man wearing a red hat and a handgun. he ran out of the house and out of this very new development

complex here in buie. tonight, police do not exactly know the identity of the suspect. they're trying to figure out if this man knew the former basketball star very well, but they are learning tonight that it was over a gambling debt. we also understand that charles smith was part of the 1988 u.s. olympic team. he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. he is expected to survive. >> meanwhile, we're waiting on new developments on the don't ask, don't tell policy. the pentagon has issued new guidelines today. sometime tonight, -- late last night, but a judge allowed them to continue their current policy, at least for now. it back and forth legal battle has been waged over the last several weeks. >> we are also falling developing news out of charles
